2 O'Clock Tasting
Founders Brewing Co.

You know the drill. Make some beer, quit your job, start a beer business. It's what we did when starting Brooklyn Brew Shop, and it's what Mike Stevens and Dave Engbers did when starting the Founders Brewing Company out of Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1997.

Flavorful, complex, and often stronger than your average pint, Founders' beers aren't for everyone, and they don't claim to be. Instead they make beers for themselves, and we can respect that. But so do a lot of people it seems because in addition to the two founders, fifteen states now enjoy their brews and place them regularly at the top of most beer people's beer to try before you... well you know.

  1. Dirty Bastard

    8.5%ABV

Close your eyes, crack one open, pour a glass (a snifter is ideal), and take a whiff to realize you've been transported to your grandfather's gentlemen's club as smoke, leather, and the very apparent scent of alcohol fill your nose. Open your eyes to discover not mounted elk heads on the wall, but instead a murky mahogany scotch ale with plenty of sediment sitting before you with a flavor and body pleasantly lighter than expected resulting in a very well-balanced accompaniment to a cigar and loafers.

  2. Double Trouble

    9.4% ABV

An Imperial IPA that lives up to its name and makes us tipsy through sight alone, Double Trouble smells like a grapefruit packed in crate of hops and looks like hazy honey drenched in sunlight. With a strong malt body and sweetness, it packs a bitter bite at the end of each lushly aromatic and hoppy sip.

  3. Breakfast Stout

    8.3% ABV

Beer for breakfast? Who are we to judge? Brewed with flaked oats, chocolate, and two kinds of coffee beans, this Imperial Stout pours jet black with a thick, tan head that strongly resembles latte foam. In fact, coffee really shines through in this beer, giving off a strong aroma of fresh roasted beans, caramel, and roasted malt. If you like your coffee black and your beer before noon, this is the perfect way to start the day.
