Top 5 Beers to Wave a Flag At

Beer List - June 14, 2011

Throughout history, waving a flag has been the chosen method for showing pride in something. Be it a country, a sports team, or the game of chess at a NASCAR race.

That's why in honor of Flag Day we put together a quick list of Flag themed beers because we can think of no better way to show pride in what you're drinking than by sticking a flag on it. Just resist the temptation to wave these 5 beers around, or your pride will be on display with a 1-fizzy-beer-salute that would make Betsy Ross proud.

  1. Stoudt's American Pale Ale

    @StoudtsBrewery | 5% ABV

    If we were to have the Top 1 Beer to Wave a Flag At list - this beer would definitely be that one. The Pennsylvania based Stoudt's American Pale Ale is crisp, citrus-y and has an Old Glory label that you just have to pledge allegiance. And at an easy drinking 5% this is one to drink all day long (if Flag Day was in fact, that kind of holiday.)

  2. Firestone Walker's Union Jack IPA

    @FirestoneWalker | 7.5% ABV

    This beer doesn't exactly have a flag plastered across it, but it's at least named after a flag. The English flag to be exact. And who knows? If George Washington didn't make it across the Delaware that cold Christmas night in 1776, this California IPA might be our national drink. It would just be 3% less alcoholic, a bit warmer, and not very carbonated. God bless the USA.

  3. Darwin Brewery's Original Flag Porter

    5% ABV

    What better way to celebrate Flag Day than with an Original Flag? We don't know exactly what that means (really, the first flag ever?) but it uses an 1825 yeast salvaged from a sunken vessel in the English Channel - which we must admit is pretty original. Add in a smooth finish, nice roast characteristics, and hell of a story and it is certainly a beer to raise a flag to.

  4. Flag Hill Farm's Vermont Sparkling Cyder

    9.5% ABV

    We imagine Flag Hill Farm to be a giant game of capture the flag played about May Poles all while drinking delightfully dry, sparkling cider. So pretty much the happiest place on earth. Real or imagined we recommend recreating this exact experience in your own backyard, it is Flag Day after all.

  5. Rogue's American Amber

    @RougeAles | 5.6% ABV

    For those who find enjoyment under the hood of a car or even, let's say, in a mine, this is your beer. The people at Rogue get their hands dirty everyday by not only brewing, but by growing their own hops and malting some of their own barley instead of importing it from such far away places as Minnesota. This can-do attitude is what rolling up your sleeves, putting on a hat, and standing in front of a unfurled American flag is all about.

    I believe Flag Day is only a United States holiday making two and three questionable choices. 21st Amendments Live Free or Die IPA might be a more accurate choice.

    Thanks for putting a cider on your list! My fiance Paul and I are huge beer lovers but just found out he can't have gluten anymore. And even though I can still have all the IPAs in the world it is nice to share something with him we both like! And please please make us a GF kit!

    Hi there folks. We're pretty amused about Flag Hill Farm being the happiest place on Earth. We think the birds and the bees are pretty happy in our Apple orchard beciuse we don't use ANY sprays!
    Beer enthusiasts? Keep a look out for our newest Cyder in the Flagship coming out this Fall 2011. Available only in Vermont....(bring some back for your friends?)
