Top 5 Patriotic Beers

Beer List - February 20, 2012

When's the last time you actually celebrated Presidents' Day? It's usually marked by that three-day weekend you don't know is coming, followed by praising its arrival, then shopping crazy sales or hanging out on a friend's couch for one too many hours that Sunday night. But there is one thing that we've always had in common with almost every president who's ever been in office: a love of beer. From the end of prohibition to beer summits, there is one thing that every party can agree on, and that is that beer is totally awesome.

Since all you'll really be doing this long weekend is chilling out anyway, why not drink some patriotic beers to make yourself feel like you're really celebrating our country the way it's meant to be celebrated? In honor of this Presidents' Day, here are our top 5 patriotic beers.

  1. Founding Fathers Brewing Company - Founding Fathers Lager

    @FFProducts | % ABV

    Well, it wouldn't be America without the Founding Fathers, and it wouldn't be a patriotic beers list without a selection from new Minnesota-based Founding Fathers Brewing Company, whose brand not only celebrates national brewing but also donates 50% of profits to troops and their families. This American lager is made from a blend of three American hops and a bit of roasted caramel malt. And since no beer tastes as good as good-cause beer, when your significant other raises an eyebrow at your excessive bottle purchase, you can just turn to them and say, ever so sincerely, "but I'm doing it for the troops." You can't argue with that.

  2. Crystal Springs Brewing Company - Doc's American Porter

    @crystalspringsb | 7.5% ABV

    Like all Americans, Doc's American Porter is a culmination of both native and international ingredients. Using seven different grains from three different countries, this porter has a hearty flavor with strong chocolate notes, and Crystal Springs releases special blends of this recipe for each new season.

  3. Yards Brewing Company - Poor Richard's Tavern Spruce Ale

    @yardsbrew | 5% ABV

    Founding Father Benjamin Franklin is known for a lot of things, but real brewheads know that he was a great lover of beer. Brewed to celebrate his 300th birthday, Poor Richard's Tavern Spruce Ale is based on Ben's original beer recipe, using spruce essence and molasses, as barley and hops weren't easily accessible back in the day. Because, you see, when he wasn't doing things like inventing ways to make the country a better place, he was making and drinking his own ale. And isn't that what America is all about?

  4. Xbeeriment - Xbeeriment Barack #44

    7.7% ABV

    Okay, this beer wasn't brewed in America, but it was made to celebrate Barack Obama's inauguration as the 44th President of the United States. A smoky stout with citrusy notes, this Danish beer is pretty malty and potent, making it great for both drinking and cooking. Nothing would say narcissism like hosting official beer summits with a beer named after yourself, but if we were him, we'd totally do it. In fact, we plug our own beer all the time.

  5. JoBoy's BrewPub - Patriot Ale

    @joboybrewpub | 4.4% ABV

    With a low ABV, fruity aroma and light body, the Patriot Ale is easy to drink and even easier to control. It's perfect for light drinkers, warm February barbecue days (on the west coast, of course), or your war vet grandpa, who gets way too animated on the heavier sauce.
